5 Great Things to Experience in PEI

With the state of the Canadian dollar and international travel bringing security concerns, vacationing close to home is the choice of many. What better way to explore our part of the world than by taking a road trip? Whether your car takes you across your own province or throughout the Maritimes, the east coast of Canada is an exceptional part of the country to explore, a dollar is worth a dollar here, and it’s all right in our own backyard.

Although Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick share many similarities, each offers its own particular character, activities, and opportunities. Prince Edward Island, for example, is a summertime destination for thousands from around the world. But what are some of the things that make it so?

1) Anne of Green Gables

Lucy Maud Montgomery’s fictional character is a major tourist attraction, especially for visitors from Japan. She’s appeared in at least nine novels, been translated countless times, and has been adapted for stage, film, television, and she’s even been animated. While in PEI, you can see two Anne musicals, visit historical Anne and Montgomery sites, and pick up all the Anne souvenirs your heart desires. For more Anne, click here.

2) The Beach

PEI is home to 11,000 km of shoreline, according to Tourism PEI, and much of that is pristine beach area. Our sand and dunes lead to some of the most enticing waters imaginable, with both supervised and unsupervised beach areas fringing the entire province. Brackley Beach is the go-to for many, and Basin Head is a must-see with its “Singing Sands”. For more PEI beach info, click here.

3) Golf

PEI is one of the world’s great golf destinations. More than 400 fairways are never more than minutes away, and here you can golf 10 of the Top 100 courses in Canada. Featured in print and on TV around the world, 5% of the top golf courses in North America are found here. But don’t let that intimidate you; we have courses suitable for all levels of play. 4) Arts, Culture, Heritage & Cuisine

Birthplace of Confederation, and home to both the Culinary Institute of Canada and the world’s longest running annual musical theatre production (see item #1), from classic to contemporary, local and global, PEI’s got it. A hotbed for art galleries and studios, theatre, media arts, music, artisans of all sorts, cultural festivals, and experiential options, what better souvenir to take home than the memory of a cultural experience or the work of an Island artisan? 5) Confederation Bridge

Joining Prince Edward Island at Borden-Carlton to the mainland at Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, the Confederation Bridge is one of the Island’s primary photo ops. An impressive feat of engineering at 12.9 km (8 miles), the bridge is the longest in the world covering ice-bearing water. FYI: There’s no charge when you cross to the Island, you pay when you leave. Of course, this is just a taste of what PEI has to offer. You can also walk, run or cycle the Confederation Trial from tip-to-tip, take in the Abegweit Panmure Island Pow-Wow, the Highland Games or visit the Acadian Musical Village; visit historical landmarks where the Fathers of Confederation walked and met; take in a traditional lobster supper or a harness race… You get the picture.
